Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons why people see doctors, miss a day at work, and take a physiotherapy appointment. Low back pain can manifest as dull ache or stabbing pain and be more prominent with movement. A person can also experience neurological signs and symptoms, like numbness or pins & needles.
Research suggests that early intervention is the key in relieving lower back pain symptoms and improving functions. It is recommended to seek physiotherapy treatments in the early stages of injury or pain as conservative management for a period of 6 or 12 weeks. Active approach including hands-on treatment and exercise program is proven to be more effective than rest and medications.
There are two types of back pain:
Facts and statistics:
Have you noticed that with certain overhead activities you are experiencing pain in your shoulder joint? This might mean that you are experiencing shoulder impingement due to muscle imbalance often related to poor posture or repetitive activities.
Shoulder pain and injuries are very common among people of all ages. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in our body and its movement depends on many surrounding structures, like ligaments, muscles, tendons, and bones to keep it stable. This also makes it the most unstable joint that is prone to many pathologies if the biomechanical integrity is challenged. Many times, shoulder pain is not even directly related to the joint itself, but other structures like neck can be the actual cause of your shoulder pain.
At Physiotherapy and Headache Centre we have a complete understanding of the shoulder complex, related pain mechanisms, and exercise prescription, therefore we can help you to return to function and relieve your pain.
Elbow pain can be caused by a sports injury, repetitive strain injury, or muscle imbalance, and weakness. The most common elbow pain is called “tennis elbow”. Tennis elbow is caused by micro-tearing of the tendons of the common wrist extensors that leads to inflammation and pain. You may experience pain with lifting that involves wrist extension and with gripping. The pain will be worse at night and after repetitive activities, and better with rest.
In the initial phase of your elbow pain, your GP can recommend anti-inflammatory medications to relieve inflammation and ease the pain.
Your Physiotherapist will perform a detailed assessment to find out why your wrist extensors are overloaded. We will examine your range of motion and muscle strength and look for a cause of your elbow pain. You will be given hands-on treatment and a tailored exercise program that will target weak or tight muscles.
In some cases, we will also recommend a supportive device, like an elbow brace that can help in pain management. We will also use acupuncture needles as it is proven to be very effective in relieving muscle tension and pain.
